RIM drops co-CEOs’ but the outlook is just as grim.

Announcement :

Research In Motion Names Thorsten Heins President and CEO

  • Board Acts on Recommendation of Co-CEOs to Implement Succession Plan
  • Mike Lazaridis Named Vice Chair of the Board
  • Jim Balsillie Remains a Director
  • Barbara Stymiest Named Independent Board Chair
  • Prem Watsa Named Independent Director

Analysis:

Basically the players have been moved around the board, but the story is still the same. If RIM are going to be a even a slightly convincing third or fourth in the mobile arena, they need a Nokia style burning platform memo, and a talent transplant. They are fast losing ground and spending time on Tablets that have bombed. Get QNX working on a phone, and get BBM everywhere. The only thing RIM does well is BBM, and even that isn't on the tablet(s) yet - it should be sending warning alarms off to everybody not least the management teams.

Anyone who assumes that a simple CEO swap is the answer to all of RIMs issues is woefully misinformed, or worse, just blinded by false hope.
